Barry has been representing LGBTI asylum seekers and refugees for nearly 20 years. In his practice, he has particular expertise in asylum and human rights claims based on sexual and gender identity. Over the years, he has spoken on the subject on many occasions including at universities, conferences, trade union and Pride events. He currently plays an advisory role for academics carrying out a comparative study on the position for LGBTI asylum seekers in different European countries.
He has been a volunteer and supporter of Micro Rainbow for many years and we are delighted to welcome him to our board.

“We are thrilled that Barry agreed to become a director. Micro Rainbow is expanding quickly. I believe that Barry’s exceptional profile and expertise not only in the immigration field but also in third sector organisations will provide invaluable support to the board in managing this expansion. I also believe that his contribution will lead Micro Rainbow to support even more LGBTI people seeking safety in the UK, increasing our social impact”.
Barry O’Leary said
“I am honoured and delighted to be joining the board. I very much admire the work of Micro Rainbow: the creation of safe houses for LGBTI asylum seekers and refugees is ground-breaking and extremely welcome; and the support for those who have found safety but face the often daunting prospect of moving on with their lives in the UK is essential. I look forward to being part of the expansion of this work”.
Barry is listed by the Chambers Directory as a Band 1 leader in the field and by the Legal 500 as a leading individual.
